The Last of Us Part 2 review: We’re better than this

Early on, the previews gave us clues that a tragic event that would trigger the journey of the second game. It's approximately twice as big as the first, if not bigger. This is a grown-up experience through and through and a fine example of gaming as art. It is split into many chapters and presents more than a few surprises along the way, but you can feel the conclusion is always on the horizon, even though it is often out of reach. In Part II, Ellie played by Ashley Johnson and Joel Troy Baker are four years older. With solid but unimportant gameplay mechanics, a title that should have been game of the year is instead relegated to the sales pile. The grass blows in the wind, and it gives you a place to hide while you creep up on a foe. The only people that will be satisfied playing this trash are people who didn't like Joel to start with and want to play part of the game as a woman with manly features. And Uncharted 3. The Last of Us Part II presents an absolutely crucial and challenging narrative about love and hate. They DO bring the fun to zero for me… it simply trounces whatever marvelous gameplay and graphics the game might have to offer. And, for those who have hearing, sight or movement difficulties, Naughty Dog has even included accessibility options in the settings. Unlike the first game, dark areas in The Last of Us 2 are extremely dark, leaving you to rely solely on the short throw of light presented by your lapel torch. The event that sets Ellie off to seek revenge takes even more from her. What's that coming over the hill... You only need to see Ellie and Joel's character models, for which the adjective "lifelike" is a more literal than figurative, to appreciate where the seven years and who-knows-how-many millions Naughty Dog invested in this game went. Naughty Dog Kill 'em all While The Last of Us Part 2 is certainly a journey, the game itself is less about adventure and more about survival. It's a clever trick that Naughty Dog has pulled off many times in the past too, just not on this scale. You might have to experience the story in exactly the form designated by Neil Druckmann and his team at Naughty Dog, but how you get to each major plot point feels more in your hands. Their relationship, we find out, isn't what it used to be. The variance in locations will come as a welcome change for those who grew tired of the rehash of desolate apartment buildings on offer in The Last of Us, often varied only by seasons. Between the facial expressions and emotion behind each line delivered, I was completely enthralled in what was happening on-screen. Abby in combat. Five years ago, in the events of the first game, Joel treks across the country with 14-year-old Ellie, who's immune to the infection. The environment design alone makes exploration worthwhile, however plodding it may become. Other times, something terrible would happen, only for me to be thrown back into combat without a moment to take it in. There are artifacts, often in the form of documents, which give further insights into the game's story, while those who love to collect items can pick up trading cards along the way. This is where The Last of Us II contextualizes Ellie's rampage, and it's the entire reason the story works at all. Holed up in an encampment in Jackson, Wyoming, Ellie and Joel are trying to come to terms with the consequences of their previous actions, and the world continues to suffer from the chaos of the infection that has transformed mankind and ravaged civilization. Combat went the best for me when enemies would come to investigate a downed colleague and I could pick them off individually, or when they were far enough apart that I could take them down unseen. LOU2 is an interesting experience, one that I am happy to have had, but not one that I want to have again. In that way, the environment plays a role in the gameplay as well as the story. There are more cut scenes, much larger locations - some open world - and many more of them, to boot. It reminds me of the games that my mom, who really did not understand my fascination with video games, would look over my shoulder to watch. Prepare to be riveted, surprised and, yes, traumatized. It is often as gory, graphic and unsettling as games can be. But story makes it all glue together. And that's not to say there aren't areas to investigate. It's really up to you how you want to play. It has a linear narrative, with beginning, middle and end - although not necessarily in that order. There's no "oh god, I'm the monster" moment; just profound sadness about all the pain she's caused. It was hard for me at first to understand why she'd want to risk all that for a dangerous revenge quest when she could process her grief among friends and loved ones in relative safety. In addition, workbenches are few and far between — and when you do find one, you may be frustrated to find that you don't have enough materials to upgrade anything. You also kill a lot of human enemies, whom the developers have given names and friends, and whose beliefs have led them to join one of two factions: the militant Washington Liberation Front or the religious Seraphites. The Last of Us Part II performance Before I dive into what I experienced, keep in mind that I played a review copy of The Last of Us Part II, so what happened to me might not happen to you, or it could differ entirely. The lone exception was the dogs…which definitely made me wince. The Last of Us Part II pulls the feat off effortlessly. It's far easier and safer, for one, and I didn't want to miss any of the interesting sub-plots found in scattered notes and photographs just because I wanted to kill fewer people. It is, unquestionably, heartbreaking. How do you replicate the success of the original? In a masterful scene, Ellie and Dina both share secrets; as a queer player, it felt wonderful to see queer characters confess things other than their sexuality. It was dark very in places but overall a story of fatherly love and hope. Play All it takes is a little push for Ellie to go mad and her quest for revenge story is a brutalistic masterpiece. Despite those annoyances, finding collectibles and piecing together the stories held within them is rewarding and paints a picture of the outbreak as it developed through the years. While the long-awaited sequel seemingly starts out as a run-of-the-mill revenge tale, it becomes more nuanced, and Naughty Dog's vision begins to come to light. Not only is this the studio's best-looking game yet, it's arguably the PlayStation 4's. Just because production value is high doesn't make it great. Naughty Dog Her relationship with Joel deepens, too, as they create a new life after the events of the first game. But ultimately, yes, the game is fun to play. In the early parts of the game, there are long stretches between combat and narrative in which you laboriously pick your way through the ruins of Seattle. Instead, we found that taking a more calculated, stealthy approach seemed to result in better outcomes — and there are plenty more combat options to facilitate that.
